Transforming an Urn for Home Decor

Before and After; Transforming an Urn for Home Decor

Before

When a sweet friend gave me this urn last Friday and said, "Maybe you can do something with it!", all I could think of was how lovely it could be once painted and refreshed. Although its color was austere, I loved its simplicity and thought it could be perfect for displaying a house plant or (my favorite) coral. And so the painting adventure began!

Lining up some acrylic paints, I chose a few that would be pretty for the urn.

This slate-blue color was a mixture of Folk Art's french blue, italian sage, and medium gray and was used as the base coat.

To give it a vintage look, I went back and forth between painting the urn with a brush and distressing it with a paper towel. The distressing allowed some of the original black to show through.

Once the entire urn had a slate-blue base, I added Folk Art's battleship gray as a top coat. As soon as it was painted on, I took the paper towel again and dabbed it off. This gave the urn lovely highlights and lowlights.

Once it had dried, it was time to decorate!

With all the gray-blue accents in my bedroom, I couldn't think of a more perfect place for my refreshed urn to reside. I piled it high with white and blue coral it and set it on a side table.

The different layers of light gray, slate blue, and black give this piece texture and interest.

Add a few neutral colored accessories, such as a shell box, a scented candle, and a matchbox (with a nest on it, of course!), and you have a lovely vignette!
